Orchestra/Band/Enseble (Conductors)

Our history has left us with many great conductors. Today, also we have many great conductors. Anyway, every time I had the chance to talk about great conductors with my colleges, fortunately or unfortunately we have different opinions about what a great conductor is.

In a general way of speech, we agreed to put conductors in 4 categories.

1. Conductors who can make music with the ensemble either by: 1.1 talking (instructing the ensemble the ways of making music)1.2 Having a great technique of directing the music with his hands and expressing it.

2.Conductors who can make music with ensemble just by talking and instructing and making great result but not having a great technique or none about conducting.

3.Conductors who can make music with the ensemble by the expression of his hands but they have nothing to say about music or to the ensemble.

4.Conductors who can’t do either one.

Between this categories are more subcategories, for now, we will generalize it this way just to make the final point.

It is obvious that the first choice is more likely the most complete. There are some people who like conductors who don’t talk much and others liked to be instructed.
For sure by now, we know that a conductor should have a complete knowledge about the score, background of the music, knowledge of style and the whole other things that he needs to know to conduct a piece (so much work actually). The knowledge of the instruments in the ensemble is very important too, so he knows what an instrument is capable of or incapable of. Also it should have chemistry with the ensemble, so they can perform music together.

Unfortunately, in the region that I am now, there are so many number 4 conductors, because in this region, almost everybody’s goal is to become a conductor, but by the shortcut. Power, control, image and authority are the virtues to look for to become a conductor. It is social statuses per say. Some of them, they did a course for 3 months; they got the diploma and bravo! They are conductors.

Of course this region has many number 1 conductors and I had the pleasure and the privilege to work with them. Anyway, here my point, a diploma does not guarantee anything. Many of them should less talk and more study.


La historia de la música nos ha dejado magníficos directores. Hoy en día también gozamos de grandes directores. Afortunadamente o desafortunadamente, siempre que he tenido ocasión de hablar con mis colegas sobre que es un gran director, las opiniones has sido dispares.

En conclusión y generalizando, hemos formado 4 categorías entre directores.

1.Directores que son capaces de transmitir e instruir a una agrupación hablando y con la batuta, es decir, aquellos que poseen una técnica con la cual pueden transmitir música.

2.Directores que transmiten e instruyen una agrupación solamente hablando, ya que carecen de una técnica importante para transmitir con la batuta.

3.Directores que no hablan y que transmiten e instruyen solamente con la batuta.

4.Directores que no son capaces ni de un modo u otro.

Entre estas categorías hay muchas otras categorías. Por ahora, y para llegar al punto que quiero transmitir lo pondremos en estas 4 categorías.

Está claro que la primera categoría es la más completa. A muchos de mis colegas les gusta un director que no hable y que solamente dirija, a otros les gusta lo contrario, y a otros una mezcla.

Dejar claro que un director tiene que tener el conocimiento de la partitura, su historia, conocer el estilo de la época, compositor etc. (mucho que estudiar). Conocer los instrumentos de la agrupación es otro punto muy importante. Tener buena conexión con los miembros del grupo y hacer buena música juntos.

Desafortunadamente, en la región donde vivo, hay muchos número 4 directores. Aquí, ser director es un estatus, una búsqueda de fuerza, control y autoritarismo son más importantes que saber sobre la música en sí. Muchos salen de país de vacaciones y vuelven con un diploma de director.

Claro que en esta región también hay directores de la categoría 1. He tenido la suerte de hacer música con ellos. Así pues he llegado a este punto, un diploma no hace a nadie ser director, hay muchas más cosas que uno tiene que hacer para ser un buen director y entre esas cosas esta hablar menos y estudiar más.
