Music: Art or Image? Música: ¿Arte o Imagen?

Lately, I have been watching and attending concerts. It struck me the lack of emotions from performers and audience. It is an emotionless play more than a performance. It seems a form, where people gather to “enjoy” music and art with forced enjoyment. The other extreme also exists, where performer's movements and gestures shadow the music itself, making it fake and unnatural. The reaction of the audience equals the performers, it appears they are not sure if they should like it or not and the general reaction spreads like a virus, with overwhelming bravos and applause.

I like to point out that it is not always like this; anyways, it does happen more often than that I wish. I have been in many great performances, where the performers reactions were accordingly with the music as well as the audience.

Then, many questions invade me. One of them; why do I play music? What is music for? Why do we have music? What is the difference between live music and a recording?

We have music to make us feel emotions, there for, we do not need to understand music or be experts in music to attend a classical performance. We just need to sit and feel. It is as simple as that. We do not need to pretend or try, we need to listen and feel, imagine and enjoy.

As a performer, I do my best to be as loyal as possible to the score. I like to shape my sound or the sound of the ensemble in the same directions as the composers will, always from my point of view, after a previous study and research of all the necessary information to perform. This study is extraordinary. I get to know a composer, his time, his life, his feelings and how he put it down in paper. Making this study it will bring me so many emotions and these experiences will shape my personality and artistry.

I have many friends that think this way. We have been educated in music this way. Then, what happens with performers who make emotionless sounds or performers whose movements are so fake that they try to cover the obvious fact; the luck of artistry or emotion.

The association between art and social status along with the image has been part of concerts and art education itself. Principal reasons for families sending their children to learn music, or any type of art, were purely for social appearance and not for their full education (this is a generalization and all cases are NOT like that). Also, some time ago, everybody could not reach music and art education for economical reasons and luckily this has changed, but, the misunderstanding of art and social status/image got a little mess-up.

My final cogitation will be to observe this problem and to make surethe reason of doing art or music is purely for the sake of art or personal growth. At the same time ask people to attend concerts for pure enjoyment, ask them to feel without an understanding of music because it is not necessary. We do not need to pretend, or to be “someone” to go to a concert, at the same time, we are not more because we were trained in the art world, we are just artists with the same social status or image as any other with a different profession.

Estos últimos meses he asistido a diferentes conciertos y eventos de música. Mi asombro despertó por la poca sensibilidad de los ejecutantes; sin sentimientos ni ideas musicales. Parecía una obra sin forma o sentido donde gente sentada ejecutaban sonidos sin sentido. Otro extremo de esta cruda realidad vino de ejecutantes que con la exageración de movimientos intentaban esconder la inexpresividad con la que ejecutaban la música. El público, atónito, aplaudía con inseguridad pero gracias a los exagerados “bravos”, el virus de la exaltación se expandió por el auditorio.

Por fortuna no todos los conciertos han sido de esta índole, aunque sí muchos más de los que me hubieran gustado. He asistido a conciertos extraordinarios donde la reacción del público va acorde con la música y los músicos.

Todas estas experiencias me han llevado a reflexionar y a preguntarme cuestiones tales como ¿Por qué me dedico a la música? ¿Para qué sirve la música? ¿Por qué tenemos música? ¿Cual es la diferencia entre la música en directo y las grabaciones?

La música nos hace sentir emociones, y si esta es la razón de la existencia de la música y por ello el objetivo total de la música, no necesitamos entender la música para asistir a conciertos; con sentarnos y sentir es suficiente. Pretender entender y/o aparentar no es en absoluto necesario.

A la hora de la ejecución me esfuerzo al máximo en ser fiel a la partitura. Me gusta que la idea del sonido que el compositor quiso reflejar, reflejarlo con mi sonido o con el sonido de la agrupación, dándole la misma forma que le hubiera gustado al compositor, siempre desde mi propia interpretación, después de haber hecho un exhaustivo análisis sobre la obra, estilo y compositor. Este trabajo es magnífico, ya que después de todo, la experiencia de este tiempo aprendiendo me hace desarrollar como artista y persona.

Muchos de mis amigos y colegas piensan y trabajan de esta manera, hemos sido educados de esta forma. Así pues, ¿Qué ocurre con estos ejecutantes que producen sonidos sin sentimiento o idea musical? ¿Por qué esos movimientos sin sentido con la finalidad de tapar lo evidente?

La música clásica y el arte siempre han estado asociados a una clase social específica y a una imagen. La razón principal por la que muchas familias mandaban a sus hijos a una escuela de música o arte eran puramente sociales y de imagen (claro está que esto es una generalización y no todos los casos son así). Por otra parte, hace un tiempo, no todas las familias tenían las facilidades para mandar a sus hijos e hijas a una escuela de música o arte. Esto afortunadamente ha cambiado, pero este cambio ha traído la confusión entre los valores y los principios por los que hacemos música y arte.

Mi reflexión final es que observemos este problema y así, podamos fijar valores, objetivos principales y las razones por la que hacemos arte, que para mí son el trabajo por el arte en sí y el desarrollo humano personal, por encima de cualquier imagen o pretensión. Al mismo tiempo, pidamos a la gente que asista a los conciertos por diversión y no por entendimiento, no hace falta entender para disfrutar. No hay que pretender, o intentar ser “alguien” para asistir a un concierto, ni tampoco, los artistas somos más o menos que nadie por dedicarnos a esto, somos iguales que el resto de la sociedad.
